Carol Ortega Algarra, Founder & BOD Chairwoman

Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, Ms. Ortega is the Founder of RECC Foundation.  For over 18 years, Carol has continuously demonstrated the ability to successfully guide cross-functional teams and achieve strategic goals for a diverse group of organizations at the international arena.

In Colombia, her professional experience varies between the private, governmental and academic sectors. As a professor for Xavierian University, one of the most prestigious universities in Colombia, Carol was part of various research projects in financial and managerial accounting, taught classes at the post graduate level and was the Director of postgraduate studies and programs in accounting. Ms. Ortega has authorship on numerous accounting and business related academic publications worldwide.

Within the governmental sector, Ms. Ortega’s professional career includes a position as a consultant for the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of Colombia where she provided technical advice on all matters related to the process of convergence towards international standards of accounting (IAS – IFRS) for the country, under this role, Carol co-wrote the standards of accounting and financial information existing today in Colombia.

As a consultant for various medium size enterprises in Colombia, Carol has offered advice in areas such as: strategy, venture capital, business development, operations, finance and internal control, US GAAP, IASs and IFRSs, budgeting, manufacturing, forecasting and costing, human resources management, and marketing strategy.

In the U.S., her experience has been in the private and non-profit sector.  As the Deputy Executive Director for InStove, she established the organization strategy, co-wrote the business plan (financials), and designed the pitch deck and presentation resulting in the first place at the Portland Social Venture Society “Fast Pitch” competition among others, taking InStove from a start-up to a sophisticated, sustainable, growth-oriented, international non-profit organization. As the Director of Finance and Operations for Adelante Mujeres, Carol designed and led the incubation and acceleration program of companies in this entity, today is the largest acceleration program in the State of Oregon in the United States serving the Latino community. Carol is a recognized international expert in business training “Pitch”.

Carol earned a B.S. in Accounting and a Master’s degree in Management Accounting, from Xavierian University in Bogota, Colombia where she was recognized with the “Orden al merito académico”, the highest academic honor. Ms. Ortega also holds a Master’s in Business Administration from Canisius College. Buffalo, New York.
